I start the car and drive away quickly.
No, I shouldn’t think like that. Don’t, Amy. You have to stop him before he does that. Stay hopeful. Maybe it’s not that bad.
Oh, who am I kidding? I did this. I caused this. It’s my fault. I washed away all his drinks and made him face his pain.
I’m driving across the roads like a mad woman, ignoring upcoming traffic as if I have a pregnant lady in the back. Inside I’m praying for Jack not to do anything stupid.
I hope I’m going the right way. Oh, god, I hope I reach him time. I don’t want to see him hurt. I don’t want him to go after her. I know he’s been thinking about it for a long time. No wonder he was such a wreck. I should’ve seen it sooner. Should’ve acted sooner. Maybe we wouldn’t be in such a mess then.
When I arrive at the bridge I put on the big lights and scan the area. My heart’s going in overdrive as I stop the car. “Maddy, stay here,” I say, and I get out.
I grab a flashlight from the back of my car and turn it on. Waving it about, I hope to find what I’m looking for, but all I see are tire tracks on the road.
Wait, what? Tire tracks?
I step closer and check them out. It looks like the trail went into the water.
No …
I run to the side and peer over the edge. I point my light at the water. In the distance, I can clearly see a truck disappearing under the water. His truck.
“Jack!”
