  For a moment there was only silence between us. I continued to stare at him, the man in the mask.

  “How did you …” I said, my fingers trailing his jaws. His dark brown curls swirled around my fingers.

  “It was me the whole time, Emily.”

  “But the note, and the mask, they were on his—”

  “I accidentally put the mask there when I came home last night and Ryan borrowed my notebook.”

  “Oh,” I said and gaped at his marvelous face, the fine ridges, his smooth, but rugged skin. The brown curls that framed his face and his beautiful smile. Why had I never seen this side of him before?

  He took the mask off again and threw it to the floor. “I wanted you, always, Emily.” He placed his hands on my sides, leaving warm spots that made me shudder. “When you said you only saw me as a friend, I thought I had no chance. But then you went to the party and I thought it was the only way I could make you see me.”

  “I do see you,” I said and I hooked my arms around his neck. “But why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

  “I was afraid that you’d reject me. That’s why I didn’t want you to see me last night, because I was afraid of how you would react. But when you came over this morning and thought it was Ryan, I just had to do something about it, before you were lost to me again.”

  “I didn’t know you had these feelings for me.”

  His hands drifted to my back and he pulled me into his embrace, closing the gap between us. “Let me make it clear then.” He bent over and planted his lips firmly onto mine, giving me the kiss that I longed for since the night I first made love to him. It was really him. I’d recognize this kiss anywhere.

  When our lips parted again, he gazed intensely into my eyes, as if he was waiting on me.

  “You … We had sex,” I said, a smile appearing on my face. “My first time,” I added and laughed.

  He chuckled. “I hope it was good.”

  “Oh, my god, it was definitely good. But it’s weird, thinking about it. I had sex with my best friend.”

  He rested his forehead on mine. “Just a friend? Or more than just that?”

  I grinned. “More. Much more.”

  He smiled, his eyes glinting with hope. I melted in his arms and pulled him in for another kiss. “I wish I’d known sooner,” I said.

  “Hmm, well you know now, so what are you going to do about it?” He said with a sly grin on his face.

  “Tell Ryan he should find another girl,” I said with a wink. “And ask you if you want to be my boyfriend.”

  Kevin chortled. “I do.” He picked me up and twirled me around in the room. He buckled from the weight and we both fell down onto my bed, still laughing. He was right on top of me, his warm breath tickling my skin.

  “I love you, Emily,” he said, taking a strand of my hair and tucking it behind my ear.

  “I love you too,” I said and caressed his arm with my index finger.

  Our love was sealed with a kiss. If it wasn’t for the dance, I would’ve never known what Kevin really felt for me. Both of our deepest desires came true last night. This time however, it would never end.
